Built in the 18th Century as a prison and hanging house, Derby Gaol has been used many times for many different venues. Once used as a nightclub, this old prison is now a museum, and many of the original features have been returned to the site. This includes the massive oak doors for both the Condemned Cell and the Debtor's Cell, as well as copies of the recordings of hangings and etchings in the wood, counting down to the day of execution.
This is a site of sometimes intense paranormal activity, owing to the large amounts of hangings and suffering that happened here, sometimes to people who may have committed very small crimes. The last hanging that happened at this site is supposedly John Cotton in 1898 for the murder of his wife.
The Gaol was visited in 2002 by Living TV's Most Haunted, and is currently being maintained by Derby Heritage Centre. Please do not contact the location of the event, please make your booking through www.spookyhappenings.co.uk Full payment is required 2 weeks before the event.
