Whittington Castle is a 12th century castle in Oswestry. Whittington is an unusual borderland castle in that it does not stand on high ground; in fact, it’s quite the reverse as it sits on lowlands. In its day it had defences in the form of ditches, spring-fed moats, and marshy bogs and succeeded quite well in defending any attacks. Whittington Castle has seen many bloodied battles and and is not short of ghost and spirits that are said to haunt there. There have been unseen footsteps heard walking through the castle and unexplained cold spots. The castle is also known to have unusual sightings of children who have been seen standing at the window by the gatehouse. People who have witnessed seeing these children are said to be left feeling very emotional and tearful. People have also reported seeing a dark figure of a man standing behind them and when they turn around the figure slowly disappears. There is also the story of the Elizabethan Chest and the curse on people that opened it. The heirs allegedly perished in great pain and so much fear and trepidation is still associated to the chest that it has been locked and hidden away and the key has also been hidden.
